May was wet.....
Late spring going into summer has been a wash out! With almost a months’ worth of rain falling in Scotland in the first two weeks of May. This has definately slowed lime application down and was frustrating for us and our customers.
Sometimes waiting for things to dry up is the hardest part!

However, a bit of sunshine in June has helped us get back out again and working hard to play catch up, especially to customers patiently waiting in the Perthshire and Angus Glens for lime & Fert spreading.

On the farm we finally have all the cows out at grass. Like most farms this year’s grass growth has been delayed due to such a wet and cold spring. Our grass fields at the bottom of Glen Prosen had a good dose of reject fert/ lime mix much earlier in the year and with conditions finally improving the grass is looking fantastic. Our Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Cattle our very much enjoying the sun on their backs and good nutritious grass at their feet.

In terms of Lime, we are coming got the end of our restocking period. We have had a lot of lime delivered and stored at Angus Limestores yard. This is in preparation for spreading in the backend after harvest. We are restocking with three types of lime- mag lime, screened calcium lime from Scotland and a very good quality screened limestone from Yorkshire. We also have a small stock of ground calcium limestone.

In other news on the farm, we have sent sap samples from raspberries, barley and grass away for analysis. This is to understand the plant mineral levels and highlight any nutritional deficiencies. This is the first time we have done this on our arable ground so will let you know how we got on and if we think it was worth it.
